The village of Şirince is located near the ancient ruins of Ephesus and the cosmopolitan holiday town of Kuşadası on Turkey's Aegean coast. No one is certain of the exact history of the village, but rumors suggest that it was named Cirkince (ugly) in Circassian by former slaves released from the Roman city of Ephesus who settled there and did not want to lose their newly found homes.
For hundreds of years, Greeks and Turks lived side by side in the village until the War of Independence in 1923. After that, the local population was mostly Turkish, and a local governor changed its name to Şirince to showcase its beauty.
When the Mayan calendar predicted that December 21, 2012, would be the end of the world, Şirince's fame was renewed. New Age spiritualists said that Şirince would not be harmed, and the village was visited by 60,000 people for this special day.
