Located to the east of Muğla, bordered by the Aegean Sea to the west and south, and neighboring the Menderes River and Lake Bafa to the north, this beautiful district has successfully preserved the legacies left by various civilizations over the years. While vacationing in Didim, you can explore many sites that will take you on a journey through history. If you haven't decided on a tour in Didim yet, you can visit our Didim Tours page and explore the options that suit you best.

Miletus Ancient City

Miletus Ancient City was an important center of philosophy, art, and science during the Ancient Greek period. Located 22 km from Aydın, this ancient city is also known as the place where significant figures like Thales, Dionysios, and Archelaos lived. Among the structures in Miletus Ancient City, the most striking is the ancient theater built in the 1st century AD, with a seating capacity of 15,000 people. Although the other surrounding structures have been eroded over time, the captivating atmosphere of Miletus is still preserved.

For those interested in archaeology, the Miletus Museum is also a must-visit. Here, you can examine artifacts unearthed from Miletus Ancient City and gain extensive knowledge about the region's history.

Temple of Apollo

Located in the Didyma Ancient City in the Altınkum district of Didim, the Temple of Apollo is the third-largest temple in the world, dedicated to Apollo, the god of art, music, and the sun. Built in honor of Alexander the Great’s victory against the Persians, this temple is one of the finest examples of Hellenistic architecture and is believed to have been completed in the mid-6th century BC. The Medusa relief, which has become a symbol of Didim, is also located in the temple's courtyard.

If you haven’t visited this impressive temple before, be sure to add it to your list when you visit Didim.

Priene Ancient City

Constructed by the Ionians in 1200 BC, Priene Ancient City is an ancient city surrounded by walls built for defense against external threats. These walls, with over a thousand years of history, still retain their original grandeur. Priene is renowned for its grid-patterned architecture and its reputation as a city where wise figures resided.

The Temple of Athena Polias is one of the prominent structures in Priene Ancient City and was designed by the architect of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Bodrum. Located within the borders of Didim-Söke, this ancient city is a must-see for history enthusiasts.

Didyma Ancient City

The Didyma Ancient City, which gave its name to Didim, is considered one of the most important settlements of the Ionian period. This ancient city, which also houses the Temple of Apollo, became a religious center over the years. Located about 5-6 km from Didim, Didyma is another significant historical site that attracts both local and foreign tourists.

Heracleia Ancient City

Situated on the shores of Lake Bafa, the Heracleia Ancient City was located on the Latmos Gulf in the 4th century BC. However, due to the accumulation of alluvial deposits, it was relocated to its current position. The Temple of Athena is one of the most significant structures that have survived in Heracleia Ancient City to this day.

This ancient city has a quieter and more serene atmosphere compared to others. Located near the village of Kapıkırı, you do not need to pay any entrance fee to visit Heracleia.

Myus Ancient City

Located near Avşar Village, Myus Ancient City was built by the son of the Athenian King Codros. The first excavations began in 1908, but to this day, sufficient remains or information have not been uncovered. The castle, with its young Roman architecture, is the most striking structure that remains standing in Myus Ancient City.

Miletus Museum

While discussing Didim’s historical sites, it’s important not to forget the museums where historical artifacts are exhibited and which attract visitors’ attention. Located within the Miletus Ancient City, the Miletus Museum first opened its doors in 1973 and was later reopened in its renovated building in 2011. The museum exhibits over 20,000 artifacts, particularly those unearthed from Miletus, Priene, and the Temple of Apollo.

Miletus Ilyas Bey Caravanserai

Built by the Menteşeoğulları Ilyas Bey, the Miletus Ilyas Bey Caravanserai is located within the boundaries of the Miletus Ancient City. This historical structure, situated in front of the Miletus Ancient Theater, consists of many rooms surrounding a large courtyard. Considering the importance of caravanserais in ancient times, this is one of the places where you can most strongly feel the texture of history.

Faustina Baths

The Faustina Baths, built by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius for his wife Annia Galeria Faustina, are located just 1 km from the Didim district center. The baths feature a large pool in the middle and lion statues, making them stand out. Some of the artifacts unearthed here are exhibited in the Miletus Museum, while others are on display in the Istanbul Archaeology Museum.

Ilyas Bey Complex

Constructed by the Menteşeoğulları Ilyas Bey in 1404, the Ilyas Bey Complex is built from cut marble stones. Located within the borders of Söke district, this mosque, with its simple design, still stands strong today, defying newer structures.
