🌟 Discover the Temple of Apollo in Didim 🌟
Nestled in the heart of Didim, Aydın Province, the Temple of Apollo is one of the most iconic ancient landmarks on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Revered as a major prophecy center in antiquity, this monumental sanctuary was sacred to the ancient city of Miletus and held great influence over cities like Ephesus and Priene.
🏛️ A Place of Oracles and Sacrifice
Didyma—as it was called in ancient times—was not a city but a sacred ground, dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of sun, light, music, and prophecy. Connected to Miletus via the "Sacred Way," Didyma was the second most important oracle site after Delphi. Visitors would travel this sacred path to seek divine answers through rituals, sacrifices, and oracular consultations.
👩 A Monumental Legacy
Construction of the temple began in the 6th century BC but was halted by the Persian invasion in 494 BC. It resumed after Alexander the Great freed the region from Persian rule in 334 BC. Although never fully completed, what stands today is breathtaking: a colossal structure measuring approximately 109 x 51 meters, with a "Sella Sanctuary" (53 x 21 m) that now hosts cultural events.
Surrounded by 124 elegant Ionic columns arranged in double rows and featuring vaulted passageways, purification wells, and sacred altars, the temple's scale and symmetry still dazzle visitors. The famous Medusa head at the entrance is one of the most recognizable symbols of Didim.
